Home to more people than any other country in Africa, Nigeria is also one of the continent's most politically and economically important nations. A long history of trade, conquest, and migration have left more than 250 ethnic groups living in the country. Although they are divided by language and geography, they are also united by a shared cultural history that combines centuries-old traditions with modern creative forms. Independent since 1960, Nigeria has great economic resources in the shape of its people and its oil reserves. It also faces problems caused by ethnic diversity and maintaining a balance between preserving and exploiting its natural riches.
