What is Art?: Drawings and Cartoons

Why do artists draw instead of paint or sculpt? In many cases, they do both. An artist will sketch ideas before painting or sculpting them. But for some artists, the drawing is the complete work. What can be shown in a drawing that can't be seen in other mediums? And how did cartoons develop? Do you think they were much different than they are today?
