The game of Tennis played today developed from lawn tennis. Major Walter C. Wingfield of England created the game in 1873. The first lawn tennis game was played between two players at a garden party in Wales. It was played on a hourglass-shaped grass court. The court ws 30 yards (27 meters) wide at the baselines and 21 yards (19 meters) wide at the net. Wingfield also published the first lawn-tennis rulebook.
