Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882) began his career as a failure. He had hoped to train for a medical career, but at university he could not face cutting up dead bodies, so he left and studied to become a Church of England priest. He did not look forward to a life serving the Church, however, and spent his study time shooting birds, collecting rocks and beetles, and reading about politics and philosophy.
