The Eiffel Tower was built by a French engineer named Gustave Eiffel. At 1,024 feet (312 metres) high, it wal taller than any other structure at the time. The previous record holder, the Washington Monument, was only 555 feet (169 m). One of the reasons Eiffel's tower could reach such a great height was Eiffel's use of building materials.
